There are some things that happen in police work—the weird and the freaky—that leave officers speechless.

Knocked Right Out of Her Shoes!

My partner and I work the 6 am to 6 am shift at the Michigan State Police Bridgeport Post. In January, around 10 pm, we were dispatched to a possible rollover PI (personal injury) accident on southbound I-75. Upon arrival, we observed a truck off to the side of the roadway, with a man sitting behind the wheel, trying to get the vehicle unstuck from the snow. Then, we observed a van that had crashed into the ditch about one hundred yards south of the truck. We proceeded to the van, which was occupied by three subjects when it crashed.

We also observed a third vehicle another sixty yards further south that had crashed into the median wall. As we were checking for injuries, I observed the subject from the truck staggering toward us. The female driver of the van stated the driver in the truck had been all over the road and she had tried to avoid him. The driver in the other car hit the back of her van while she was trying to avoid the possible drunk. It was a mess.

Back-up troopers arrived on scene and took care of the injured lady in the third vehicle. An ambulance arrived on scene and took care of the people with non-life-threatening injuries. My partner and I then focused on the suspect who appeared to be drunk. After we ran him through sobriety tests, which he failed miserably, we had a wrecker service dispatched and they started cleaning up the scene. They had the scene almost completely cleaned up and the ambulance had left the scene.

We were getting ready to take the drunk driver to jail, when I walked the one hundred yards north back to his truck. I told the wrecker driver that we were all set and no “holds” on vehicle, when we both looked across the freeway to the northbound side of freeway I-75. I saw a white vehicle in the left (fast) lane, gawking at the accident on our side of the roadway. The vehicle had slowed down to about 30 mph.

A black, four-door Blazer, traveling at the normal speed, hit the gawker’s vehicle in the rear. It made a huge bang and then the gawker’s vehicle hit the median barrier. The gawker’s vehicle then traveled about sixty yards down the median barrier, shooting an impressive flow of sparks about ten feet into the air as it traveled.

At this point, I was irritated and let Central Dispatch know that we just had “gawker crash” on the northbound side. Then the weirdest thing happened. I observed the driver of the Blazer get out of her vehicle, which was still in the left lane. The Blazer had a ton of front-end damage from hitting the gawker’s vehicle, and the lights were not working on it. I looked and observed another vehicle heading straight toward the Blazer.
